I am looking for a good alternative beach to visit besides Myrtle Beach. I'm hoping for similar drive times (6-7 hours from JC or so). I'm going with another girlfriend for a girls only getaway. All we plan to do is lay on the beach, so I'm not interested in other attractions.
Suggestions?
Thanks!
Savannah, GA - Tybee Island
Tybee Island just had it's beach renovated so if you're looking to lay out all day you can definitely do it here. Tybee's got a few restaurants and some shopping, but you can make the 30 min trip to downtown Savannah, Ga which is great. There's a Savannah group on here where I've suggested good restaurants. Check it out.
Folly Beach, SC
5 hour drive from Johnson City. Low key and chill. 15-20 minutes from downtown Charleston, a great downtown with amazing food! If you go there you have to go to Magnolia's.

Wrightsville Beach, NC
I've always been a big fan of the Wilmington, NC area even though I haven't been in several years.
You've got Wrightsville and Carolina beaches right nearby. Pretty much just beaches... not all the crap involved with Myrtle Beach. And downtown Wilmington has some create restaurants and bars. Probably about 6.5 from Jocy.

These are all good choices. I'd second Rainey's recommendation on Folly since I was there in the Fall. Laid back. Great beach. As close as you can get to JC. And very accessible to Charleston if you want.
We've had lots of beach discussions on the FT. Here's the search results for "beach" . . .

folly beach!!!!!!!!!!! ... and Isle of Palms
We go to Folly Beach about 4 times a year. We LOVE it. We enjoy it because its not touristy and there's only one (i think) hotel and lots of beach houses! Great little restaurants there too!
Another little beach near Charleston is Isle of Palms. Its "nicer" in some ways, More upscale than Folly kinda, i guess. Both are only about 5 hrs away.
Gulf Shores, Alabama
This is my favorite beach and we are going again in August. The sand is PURE white and the water is a beautiful blue. Its not as crowded as Myrtle which I like but it is a 10 hour trip. To me it is SO WORTH the extra hours !
Sand
Doug is right about the sand (and water clarity). It is twice the drive, but if you've never been to the gulf coast, you need to go sometime. We used to live in Georgia and often went to the Panama City area. The surf isn't quite as rough, the sand is blinding white, and the water is usually crystal clear.
