Any recommendations for tree service in the tri-cities

I have a monster of a dead tree in the backyard. If I tackle it myself I'm sure that I will land it on my house, so I would like to hire a professional who can bring it down and haul it off. Any suggestions.

I have a neighbor who had a big one cut a couple of years ago. He made about three calls and got quotes all in excess of $3000. He decided to make one more call and got it done for $1500. It pays to shop around. There may be insurance-type things to consider, I dunno.

I'll stop by his house when he's in and see if he can tell me who did it.

I've got a large tree in my backyard that needs to come down. Certain that I'd destroy everything near the tree I'm going to seek professional help with it.

Last year I had a guy cut some trees down in the front yard, but I would not recommend him. All I remember is that his first name was Carlie. He was cheap, but extremely slow and messy.

A fella is working in the neighborhood and just knocked on the door. He spotted my rather straggledy looking trees in the front yard and figured I would be a good customer, which I would be if I had any money. They need trimmin' bad.

Anyway, Carlie took down my neighbor's pines about a month ago. The neighbor is Colin Johnson and he's a FellowTip user so you can contact him via FT to find out how the job went. http://fellowtip.com/user/21 This is not the neighbor I referred to before.

Carlie’s business card says "All-American Handyman" - Landscaping, concrete, sidewalks, driveways, waterlines, demolition, haul scrap metal, logging, cut & trim trees, insulate water pipes, sell firewood.

He offered to trim my trees and haul off the stuff for $300.

That's the Carlie that cut my pines down last year sometime. He no problem cutting down the trees... he just left me high and dry with the junk.

After he cut everything down he didn't haul it off, after he said that he would. I called him after and he said he wasn't going to haul it off because the city would to it.

Well... the next Friday when the city did their pass down my street to pickup trimmings I happened to be there. The gentleman took one look at it and asked if I'd paid someone to cut down some trees. When I said yes he said that whoever got paid had the responsibility to haul it off.

Long story short I called Carlie every day for two weeks to tell him he had to haul this stuff away and never got a call back from him. I had to borrow a trailer from a friend and make about 5 trips (there was a lot of stuff) to the drop off on Cash Hollow road because the city wouldn't get it.

About three weeks after I'd hauled it all off myself Carlie finally called saying:

  1. He wanted more money to come haul the stuff away after I'd made sure this was included in the first price.
  2. The reason he gave for not calling me back he hadn't called me was because he didn't have my phone number... which was funny because he just called me.

Anyways... Carlie is cheap but sometimes you get what you pay for.

That's the kind of stuff FT is here for! Thanks for sharing, Austin.

I'll see if I can get the neighbor who got the big tree down for $1500 to tell me who he used this afternoon.

Call my dad...you remember him? He took a tree out of my backyard last year. He's a handyman too. He knows what he's doing, being that he used to cut his own firewood and he knows on how to make them fall the right direction.

OK, so I talked to my neighbor last night. At first he couldn't come up with the name. Then he got out his phone book and is pretty sure that it was . . .

Alamo Tree Service
928-9364
320 Kenneth Hollow Rd
Watauga, TN 37694

He thinks the guy's name is Tim. He said the first quote he got when calling around was $5200. Several calls later, Alamo did it for $1800. He said the thing that made a big difference was that this guy didn't use any big equipment like a cherry picker or whatever. He just used ropes and climbed the tree like a monkey. That said, my other neighbor says that you might want to check into the insurance situation. If the tree service folks do not have insurance, then any damages/injuries may fall on you and your insurance.

That's what I know.
